The What and Why of RBM

What exactly is Recovery Battery Modulation (RBM) and why do you need it? We at LAVA, describe it as “a feature that facilitates battery modulation and network recovery, which improves a tablet’s longevity and guarantees a robust network connection.”

Jeez; who wrote that bunch of technical jargon? Okay…it might have been me. One of the challenges of selling technology is communicating in a way that helps customers understand. The seller often has a very intuitive understanding of the technology, whereas the buyer has little to no knowledge whatsoever.

I regularly talk with customers who had never heard of RBM. When they found out what it does, they realized they really need it. So this is how I explain our RBM technology in a non-technical way. There are two essential components.

First, battery modulation; our RBM boards will modulate the charging level of your tablet. This means? The battery will charge up to a set maximum such as 95%, discharge to 35% and then charge up again in a repetitive cycle. Why? To protect the battery and tablet; lithium-ion batteries are not meant to continue charging after reaching 100%. Overcharging will cause a battery to swell after a year of constant use and will damage the tablet along with it.

Second, network recovery. This means? There will be automatic tablet recovery if there is an unsuccessful attempt to reconnect to the network. Why? So you can have stable, steady and strong network connectivity, without interruptions.

Who needs RBM? Anybody who is charging their tablet 24/7. The real technological jewel in the RBM technology is the battery modulation technology.

With RBM you’ll get the optimal ROI for your tablet kiosk operation. You can either spend roughly $500 every year to replace a tablet or for a one-time payment of $60 for a basic RBM adapter, you’ll have 3 to 4 years of healthy tablet operation. All the customers I’ve talked to agree that it is a slam dunk choice.
