A customer in the oil industry needed to be able to connect a barcode scanner to a power and data adapter through USB to power it. However, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro (SM-T547) tablet’s software required a Bluetooth connection for the scanner to work. So when the scanner was physically connected to the adapter, the tablet would no longer recognize it and the data connection would drop out.

The problem was rather unique as having a hardwired connection would usually be ideal as it is more reliable. However, LAVA resolved this customer’s issue by building the eSynC-P1UE. It is a SimulCharge adapter with Power over Ethernet and one USB-A port. Unlike our other adapters, though, this USB-A port provides power but not any data. The customer could now attach the wired scanner to the adapter to power it but keep the data connection through Bluetooth. In addition, the adapter provides 5 volts at 1 amp to the port, which is double the amperage of a standard USB-A port and ensures that the scanner has enough charging power. The eSynC-P1UE also includes all the other features of the e Series, providing the Galaxy Tab Active Pro with robust battery protection and wired Ethernet recovery.

One of the selling points of USB-C is that the power direction is no longer fixed (either the USB Host or peripheral can provide power). However, this is only the case if the USB-C PD specification is implemented on the device. Presumably to save on costs, many manufacturers don’t implement USB-PD on their less expensive tablets and smartphones. This was the case for a LAVA customer who wanted to use Lenovo Tab M10 FHD Plus (TB-X606) tablets to cast content onto televisions at demo booth in stores. Because these tablets didn’t implement USB-PD, they couldn’t access the Ethernet connection on a power and data adapter while they were charging.

LAVA solved this by building the K-SynC E adapter, which features two modes: charge-only and OTG. In charge-only mode, the tablet charges through the adapter but does not recognize the wired connection. In OTG mode, the tablet runs off battery power and can both power and communicate with the adapter, giving it access to Ethernet. By manually switching between these two modes, you get an ad-hoc SimulCharge experience. Although custom-built for the Lenovo Tab M10 FHD Plus, the K-SynC E works with any OTG-capable USB-C mobile device.

When tablets or smartphones are bought in bulk for kiosk applications, they often need specific software for the implementation to work properly. Often third parties will provide this device staging service to ensure all the right apps have been installed and the OS is up-to-date. When this staging is done over Wi-Fi, it can be slow going. If you have too many devices trying to connect to the network over Wi-Fi, there will be congestion and the connection will be slow. While a common solution is to use an OTG Ethernet adapter, power then becomes a concern as mobile devices run off battery power in this mode.

The nSynC-Staging is a LAVA adapter that allows up to four mobile devices to connect to the same Ethernet connection and also keeps them charged. This means the mobile devices can download and install the required software and updates without draining their batteries because they are still being charged through the adapter. For greater compatibility, the adapter can also work in OTG mode. Here, there will be some battery drain during the software installation but additional stress on the devices’ batteries is minimized. The adapter and its Ethernet connection remain powered by the AC power source.
